Porto Beat Arsenal to Get Upper Hand in Champions League First Leg

By on Thursday, 18th February 2010

Porto get a 2-1 win at home against Arsenal, who now have it all to do in the second leg back at the Emirates Stadium.

Porto started the better of the two teams and Sol Campbell –who returned to action in the champions league for the first time since Arsenal’s defeat to Barcelona in the Final- was forced in making a tackle after Falcao got into the box, soon after his striker partner Hulk saw a shot go wide, before Porto took the lead. It was a gifted a goal for Porto, as Varela crossed a harmless ball into the box, and Lukas Fabianski managed to spill the ball into the back of the net. Fabianski was relieved that his mistake was cancelled out not long after by Sol Campbell. It was an in-swinging corner by Fabregas, which was then flicked on by Vermaelen, nodded back by Rosicky and finally headed into the back of the net by Sol Campbell. Arsenal wernt troubled much in the first half apart from Fabianski forced to make a save from a 30 yard strike from Micael. Bendtner had a shot save before the half-time whistle from a dipping Fabregas free-kick. At the half time whistle there was a heated exchange from the players after a late tackle on Fabregas.

This seemed to carry on into the second half as Rosicky was bundled over in the box and the referee waved away any protests and let play continue. This seemed to be costly as Arsenal then conceded. Sol Campbell had the ball and passed it back to Fabianski who then picked up the ball and the referee gave an indirect free-kick. And it was Micael’s quick thinking to take it and Falcao scored. Arsene Wenger was very annoyed by this decision, and even got the chance to speak to the referee about his decision, but it turned out to be a good night for Porto as their defence held on to their goal advantage to take to the Emirate Stadium.
