It has been confirmed today that Portsmouth Football Club have now entered administration.
As a result they are the first Premier League club to do so, and under Premier League rules they will now be docked 9 points.
The club was due to be in court on Monday to face a winding up order from the HMRC, but have decided to go into administration. It is believed that they feel this is the better option for the club, and the winding up order will now be postponed.
Peter Storrie, chief executive of the club, has announced he will hand in his resignation once the administrators have managed to sell the club.
The club released this statement:
“It is an extremely sad day for everyone connected with the club. By this course of action owner Balram Chainrai has kept the club alive and given someone an exceptional opportunity to take this great club on with fresh investment to steer Portsmouth in a positive direction. It is my intention to work with the administrator to help sell the business and I hope that will be quick as there is already interest in acquiring the club.”
Andrew Andronikou of UHY Hacker Young will now act as administrator and now has the responsibility of cutting costs at the club to try and keep the club afloat.
