Arsenal 5-0 Porto (6-2 agg)
Nicklas Bendtner silenced his critics from his dismal show of finishing against Hull by grabbing a hat-trick against Porto to ensure Arsenal’s progression in Europe.
Porto looked to defend their 2-1 first-leg lead at the Emirates but were torn apart in expert style by Wenger’s men who took the lead on ten minutes with Bendtner’s first of the evening.
Andrei Arshavin’s magic helped create Bendtner’s second before the half before Porto’s first chances of the game fell to a grateful Almunia. Then came a moment of magic again for Arsenal through Samir Nasri whose mazy run saw off practically the entire Porto side before he finished off in style to wrap up Arsenal’s passage to the next round.
Not to be outdone, Eboue then rounded ‘keeper Helton to score Arsenal’s fourth on the night before Bendtner finished off his hat-trick with a penalty a minute into injury time.
Fiorentina 3-2 Bayern Munich (4-4 agg)
Bayern Munich made it narrowly through to the next stage of the Champions League despite losing on the night thanks to Arjen Robben’s 30-yard screamer to win on away goals.
Juan Vargas’ 28th minute strike and Stevan Jovetic’s first of the night saw Fiorentina wipe out Bayern’s first-leg lead before Mark van Bommell’s 20-yard strike brought Bayern level on the night.
Jovetic then scored his second minutes later and looked all set to have guaranteed Fiorentina’s passage through before an immediate reply with strike worthy of winning any game from former Chelsea player Arjen Robben sealed the Germans’ advancement on away goals.
