The UK has given South Africa £1,000,000 ($1.5m) to buy condoms ahead of the World Cup to stop HIV and Aids as South Africa prepares for the World Cup.
South Africa predicts that they will need around 1 billion condoms as they expect them to be in high demand when the World Cup starts in June. With around 5 million people in South Africa suffering from Aids, and with them expecting around 450,000 foreigners attending the World Cup, there are fears that it could spread back to some nations’ countries.
FIFA last month arranged for a medical conference to be held for all countries that are in the World Cup to attend, in which South African medical Officer Victor Ramathesele said the following;
“There’s going to be a large number of people who will be descending on to the country.
There’s going to be a spirit of festivity and there could be a more than usual demand for measures such as condoms. So there are measures in place to ensure that the condom supply is going to be ramped up during this tournament.”
It has been announced that this donation given by the UK is more than double than what the government normally donates.
