Watch Champions League Highlights of Bayern Munich v Lyon on 21.04.2010
Bayern Munich will take the most slender of leads into their Champions League semi-final in France in a fortnight after Arjen Robben’s solitary goal late on in the game at Allianz Arena.
With both sides taking a cautious approach to the fixture with both aiming to get to the final in Rome, caution was not thrown to the wind as both teams sought to seek any advantage over the other.
However Bayern’s caution was severely dented when French midfielder Franck Ribery flew into a challenge with studs showing on Lyon striker Cris and saw an immediate red card on 37 minutes.
Lyon, with the man advantage, failed to show any adventure though and were eventually themselves reduced to ten men though under more controversial circumstances when Jeremy Toulalon received a harsh second yellow.
Thomas Muller should have given Bayern the lead on 53 minutes but somehow contrived to stumble over the ball with only ‘keeper Butt to beat. Robben dragged a shot wide and despite a free header, Mario Gomez could only header tamely at Lloris in the Lyon goal.
But Robben would steal the show with a driving shot from 30 yards after a trademark lazy run to give Bayern a 1-0 lead in the tie.
