Champions League Round-Up

United were knocked out of the Champions League on away goals with the biggest surprise of the evening came when Rooney was named in the starting line-up. Lyon managed to hold on to their first leg score as they lost 1-0 on the evening but went through 3-2 on aggregate.

The next round will now see Bayern Munich and Lyon meet in the semi-finals. The semi-finals will consist of 4 different nations being represented while it’s the 1st time in 7 years an English team aren’t in the semis.

Manchester United 3–2 Bayern Munich (Agg 4-4)

United started the game lively looking to finish the tie early as they scored 2 goals in the opening 7 minutes.

Gibson scored the first in the second minute as the midfielder received the lay-off from Wayne Rooney and the Gibson finished from 20 yards out. Nani added the second five minutes later the ball was played into the box from Valencia leaving Nani to flick the ball into the far bottom corner.

It was Nani who scored United’s third as they looked to cruise into the semi-finals. Valencia once again turning provider with the ball across the box to the back post for Nani to slot home for his second of the evening.

Bayern looked to get themselves back into the game, and they did so just before half-time. Olic getting on the end of a flick on, out muscling Michael Carrick and then slotting the ball past van der Sar from the tightest of angles. Bayern looked to add a second on the stroke of half-time as Robben forced a save out of the keeper from 20 yards out.

Within 10 minutes of the restart United were given a blow as Rafael was sent off for a second bookable offence. Both teams kept looking for goals with Ribery forcing van der Sar into a save from a volley, while Carrick saw a shot go over the bar from a corner.

Robben was the man who knocked out United and what a goal it was. Ribery finding him on the edge of the box from a corner and a sweet volley from the ex-Chelsea player saw the ball go into the bottom corner.

United knocked out on away goals.

Bordeaux 1-0 Lyon (Agg 2-3)

Bordeaux looked to get themselves into the semi-finals but unfortunately couldn’t turn over the first leg score line. It was Chamckh –who is bound for England in the summer- who got the home side the only goal of the game and gave them hop just before half-time. It wasn’t to be though for Bordeaux and ended up missing out by 1 goal.
