Manchester City have signed Marton Fulop on an emergency loan from Sunderland until the end of the season.
City were left without adequate goalkeeper cover following the shoulder dislocation injury to Shay Given in their goalless draw at Arsenal on Saturday. It has been confirmed that Given will be out for the rest of the season.
Their second goalkeeper Stuart Taylor is also injured leaving only Faroe Islands ‘keeper Gunnar Nielsen between the sticks, and played his first minutes in the Premiership at Arsenal following Given being stretchered off injured.
The Eastlands club had previously tried to get special dispensation to recall Joe Hart from his loan at Birmingham City but after this move was blocked, they turned to Sunderland and Fulop.
Fulop, a Hungarian international, was initially a first team regular at the Stadium of Light but had fallen behind in the pecking order behind Craig Gordon and Trevor Carson and will join up with his new teammates on Wednesday.
“The club, with the backing of the Premier League, have been in contact throughout the day with both Birmingham City and Sunderland with regards to bringing either Joe Hart or Marton Fulop to the team on an emergency basis,” read a Man City statement on their website.
“Agreement has not been reached with Birmingham, but we anticipate that Marton Fulop will join us in training (on Wednesday) and we sincerely thank him and Sunderland AFC for their help in this situation.”
