Saturday Championship Round-Up

Blackpool 3 – 1 Nottingham Forest

Blackpool kept up the pressure on fellow play-off hopefuls Swansea and Leicester with an emphatic win over already-secure Forest at Bloomfield Road.

David McGoldrick felled Seamus Coleman in the box for Charlie Adam to slot home the hosts penalty and give them the lead before DJ Campbell, on loan from rivals Leicester, scored his first of the afternoon from twelve yards.

Joe Garner clawed one back for Forest who tried for force the equaliser but their hopes were dashed by Campbell who with his second of the game with a 10-yard smasher, gave the Tangerines hope of extending their season further.

Coventry 1 – 1 Preston

Coventry and Preston played out a score-draw at the Ricoh Arena extending the Sky Blues’ winless run to nine as the away side hung on for a valuable away point.

Freddie Eastwood’s clever finish gave the home side the lead having looked dangerous early on, however Preston fought back and finally drew level through Callum Davidson from the penalty spot when Richard Wood felled Jon Parkin.

Derby 1 – 1 Crystal Palace

Another score draw at Pride Park as Crystal Palace secured an invaluable away point in their battle against the drop.

Stern John was the Eagles hero with his late goal from 12 yards out after Russell Anderson had given the home side the lead in the first half.

But Derby had Stephen Bywater to thank for quality stops from both Darren Ambrose and Stern John again to hold the home side’s point intact.

Ipswich 1 – 1 Doncaster

Ipswich and Doncaster shared the spoils in this drab end-of-season match where neither side appeared to grasp hold of a game in which Connor Wickham’s miss from 12 yards was one of the highlights.

However two late goals gave a grandstand finish to the game which Ipswich scored first in through Wickham with 18 minutes remaining.

However the Tractor Boys’ lead lasted minutes when Dean Sheils converted a penalty which he won after being shoved by Shane O’Connor.

Leicester 4 – 1 Watford

Leicester thrashed Watford at the Walkers Stadium to go one step further to securing their play-off place, but left Watford in real danger at the other end of the table.

Martyn Waghorn opened the scoring from the penalty spot and Paul Gallagher scored a stunner before striker Steve Howard was sent off for a lunge on Ross Jenkins in first-half added on time.

The away side though failed to capitalise and went further behind through goals from Jay Spearing and James Vaughan before Watford pulled one back through Martin Taylor.

Reading 6 – 0 Peterborough

Reading kept themselves firmly in the hunt for the play-offs with a thumping victory over already-relegated Peterborough.

The Posh, playing only their second game under new boss Gary Johnson, were never in the game and could have lost by more than the six scored by Reading, the first of which scored by Alex Pearce after just three minutes.

Gylfi Sigurdsson scored a penalty, Jobi McAnuff beat the offside trap to run through for three and Jimmy Kebe scored a fourth from a long-ball over the top before the break.

Sigurdsson turned provider for Shane Long to steal in, and the Icelandic international got his second and the Royals’ sixth when he tapped in from close range.

Scunthorpe 3 – 0 Bristol City

Scunthorpe overcame Bristol City courtesy of a Gary Hooper hat-trick and ended the Robbins slim chances of a play-off place whilst boosting their own chances of Championship survival.

Hooper’s first and 14th of the season came from a tap-in at close range before adding a second with an excellent turn-and-shot just after the half.

His hat-trick and victory were sealed when he rounded Robbins ‘keeper Stephen Henderson to slot home into an empty net.

West Brom 2 – 0 Middlesbrough

Promoted West Brom overcame promotion-chasing Middlesbrough in a carnival atmosphere at The Hawthorns.

They took the lead just before half time with an exquisite driving shot by Simon Cox before Graham Dorrans’ cross from the left was met by Roman Bednar to secure a comfortable win.

The win means Newcastle have to wait until Monday when they play Plymouth at Home Park to have a chance to lift the Championship title, and ends Boro’s chances of promotion this season.
