Swansea City have secured their first summer signing with the capture of midfielder Scott Donnelly from Aldershot Town.
The 22-year-old starlet will undergo a medical at the Liberty Stadium ahead of signing a three-year deal with the Swans.
Donnelly will be Paulo Sousa’s first summer signing and will look to replace Leon Britton who left the Liberty for Sheffield United earlier in the month on a free transfer.
Aldershot and Swansea are finalising a compensation package for Donnelly as he is under 24 years old but is considered to be all but done.
Donnelly scored 14 goals last season and had 11 assists as Town missed out on promotion to League Two.
He had been linked with a move to Wycombe to link up with his former manager Gary Waddock but admits that the lure of a “top Championship club” was too much to reject..
“I had a few offers on the table,” he told the official site.
“But as soon as Swansea came calling I didn’t have to think twice about it.
“Swansea are a top Championship club with a top manager. And, from what I’ve seen, they play some of the best football outside the Premier League.
“I believe I am capable of doing well in the Championship and I’m really looking forward to the challenge.
“I like to get on the ball and make things happen. Hopefully I can make things happen for Swansea City next season.”
Shots manager Kevin Dillon said: “I am pleased for Scott. He has been really good for us and his attitude has been terrific.
“I knew that he would move and the opportunity at Swansea City will be an excellent one for him. He may have to be patient once he gets there but he has great attrributes. He is excellent at set pieces. The facilities will be better for him and he will get fitter and stronger.
“We will get a very good transfer fee with a healthy sell on clause too.”
Donnelly is the first signing of the summer and comes after Swansea announced the appointment of David Leadbeater from Middlesbrough as head of recruitment at the South Wales club, arriving from a similar role he held at the Championship rivals for 15 years.
The attacking midfielder came through the youth set-up at Queens Park Rangers and made his senior debut as a 16-year-old in October 2004.
He signed his his first professional contract in February 2006 only to struggle with injury and form and was released a year later to join non-League Wealdstone, from where he joined Aldershot in November 2007.
Donnelly scored two landmark goals for the Shots, as his leveller in a 1-1 draw with Exeter City secured them promotion to the Football League, while he also scored their winner against Accrington Stanley in Aldershot’s first game back in the League.
