There was a lot of pressure for the England team to qualify not only for the Knockout stages but to go on and win the World Cup, something that they have not been looking to do so.
Capello made three changes to the team that drew the match against Algeria as Upson replaced the suspended Carragher, Milner replaced Lennon and Jermain Defoe partnered Rooney up front.
England scored after James Milner crossed the ball into the box for Defoe to beat his marker and shin the ball into the back of the net.
England were not that convincing though as they squandered many chances to extend their lead with Rooney hitting the post and Gerrard seeing a placed shot saved well by the goalkeeper.
Slovenia were very poor and didnt look that threatening, but did have their chances to get an equaliser. The best chance came as the saw a shot blocked by Upson.
Slovenia’s poor attempt to try and get something out of the game came back and hit them hard as they were all set to qualify in second place in the group although they had lost, but, a late goal in the game between USA and Algeria for USA ensured that USA finished top of the group with England qualifying in second.
