Watch World Cup Highlights of Uruguay v South Korea on 26.06.2010
Uruguay and South Korea met this afternoon in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in the first of the South African World Cup second round games.
Uruguay took the lead after barely eight minutes when Diego Forlan’s cross-box ball fell behind a static defence and the South Korean goalkeeper Jung Sung-Ryong who came for the ball and missed, leaving Luis Suarez an open goal to slot home into from a tight angle.
The South Koreans however were not done and had several chances to score, with Manchester United’s Park Ji-Sung inspiring their attacks without fully troubling Fernando Muslera, however struck a free-kick against the outside of the post in the first half.
Their endeavour was eventually rewarded, however, and pulled level to threaten pushing the tie to extra time and penalties on 68 minutes.
A deep ball into the box was headed skywards by a Uruguayan defender and fell to Lee Chung-Yong to head beyond Muslera to send thousands of South Korean supporters into raptures.
However their celebrations would be short-lived as Uruguay scored the winner with ten minutes remaining.
A corner was launched into the box and cleared by South Korea as far as Suarez eventually on the far corner of the Korean box, and cut in to the edge of the box before curling a wonderous effort beyond Jung Sung-Ryong into the far corner to send Uruguay through.
