England Captain Rio Ferdinand is out of the World Cup in South Africa after suffering a knee injury in training on Friday.
The Manchester United central defender suffered the injury in England’s first training session since arriving in South Africa only on Thursday.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson is on a plane out to South Africa to replace Ferdinand, who is to be replaced as Captain by Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard.
Ferdinand is expected to be out for 4 to 6 weeks with ligament damage.
