Watch Champions League Highlights of Young Boys vs Tottenham Hotspur on 17.08.2010
Spurs chances of progression into the Champions League hangs in the balance after defeat by Young Boys in Switzerland.
The London club were 3-0 down after just half an hour in a display that will have angered Harry Redknapp, though they did fight back to give themselves a chance in the second leg at White Hart Lane.
Senad Lulic finished well to give the home side a deserved lead as early as the fourth minute after a though ball fell kindly after playing ping-pong off Sebastien Bassong.
And not ten minutes later the home side had doubled their lead when Henri Bienvenu raced clear of the Spurs defence before side-footing a delightful shot into the far corner past the advancing Heurelio Gomes.
And bad went to worse on the half hour mark as Spurs looked set to capitulate after yet another simple through ball was not dealt with and Xavier Hochstrasser latched on to rocket home his shot into the roof of the net.
Spurs saved some face before the half time break when Bassong powered a header home from a Gareth Bale corner.
But they saved themselves even more blushes and may have found themselves a way back into the tie with their second away goal of the night when Roman Pavlyuchenko struck an incredible shot from the far corner of the area into the net giving Young Boys’ goalkeeper Wolfli no chance with just 8 minutes remaining of normal
Spurs had not played in European football’s top competition since reaching the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1960/1961 and looked at one point all set to continue their exodus from full-stream European competition. However their comeback may just be enough to give them the edge at White Hart Lane for the return leg.
