nPower Championship Roundup: Bellamy Scores On Cardiff Debut

By on Saturday, 21st August 2010

Bristol City 3-3 Barnsley

Bristol City continued their struggle at the start of their season and found themselves two down to Barnsley at Ashton Gate within 12 minutes. However a sensational game was only just beginning as City got themselves level by the break.

Barnsley scored a third to take the lead for a second time through Adam Hammill, but City rescued a point through a David Clarkson penalty late on.

Burnley 3-0 Leicester City

Burnley continued their impressive return to the Championship by thrashing Paulo Sousa’s Leicester City at Turf Moor.

Goals from Ross Wallace in first half injury time, Chris Iwelumo and Graham Alexander’s penalty on his 900th club career start earned the win for the home side; Sousa’s Leicester though are rooted to the foot of the league with just a point to their names.

Cardiff City 4-0 Doncaster Rovers

Wales international completed his sensational week by setting up two goals and getting one himself as Cardiff routed Doncaster at The Cardiff City Stadium.

Jay Bothroyd scored twice and Chris Burke added a third before Bellamy stepped up to curl a magnificent 35-yard free-kick in to complete an impressive debut and result for Cardiff.

Coventry City 2-1 Derby County

Coventry’s impressive start to the season continued in an early kick off at the Ricoh Arena by beating Derby County.

After a sluggish start, Lukas Jutkiewicz hammered in the opener for the Sky Blues from the spot after Dean Leacock bundled over Gary McSheffrey. Derby levelled through Dean Moxey after a John Brayford cross, however Ben Turner secured the points with a header at the back post.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Ipswich Town

Ipswich maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a hard-fought win at Selhurst Park.

Edgar Davids did not feature but was introduced to the crowd who had precious little else to cheer after Grant Leadbitter’s opener from the penalty spot after Claude Davis fouled Jonathan Stead, Davis seeing red for his challenge.

Carlos Edwards doubled the Tractor Boys’ lead from close range 5 minutes later before Palace salvaged some pride through Neil Danns after Andros Townsend saw red for Ipswich after fouling Palace ‘keeper Julian Speroni.

Hull City 0-0 Watford

Hull and Watford played out a forgettable goalless draw at the KC Stadium as Watford saw their unbeaten start to the season continue.

Robert Koren was threatening for Hull on his debut but failed to beat Scott Loach, and a Danny Graham snap shot was saved well by Matt Duke, but neither side broke the deadlock in a dire game always destined to end even.

Leeds United 3-1 Millwall

Leeds earned their first win of the season to end Millwall’s more than impressive start to the season at Elland Road.

However they started in the worst possible fashion when Richard Naylor headed in a Steve Morison cross into his own net.

But Leeds rallied and won in style with goals through Lloyd Sam and a Davide Somma double in the last fifteen minutes to inflict a first defeat of the season for Kenny Jackett’s men.

Preston 1-0 Portsmouth

A Paul Hayes goal gave Preston their first win of the season over beleaguered Portsmouth at Deepdale.

Hayes struck with 20 minutes left of the game from a Billy Jones cross, and could have had more had he not flashed wide of the Pompey post and the visitors not denied Preston more with fine saves by Jamie Ashdown.

Pompey meanwhile created little to threaten North End as they remain in the bottom three with just a point so far this season.

QPR 2-0 Scunthorpe

QPR kept their 100% start to the season going with a win over Scunthorpe at Loftus Road.

Neil Warnock’s men have a maximum nine points from nine and nine goals scored without conceeding to date and secured their win through new signing Bradley Orr and Heidar Helguson, both with assists from captain Adel Taarabt.

Reading 1-1 Nottingham Forest

An Adam Federici fumble gifted struggling Forest only their second point of the season at the Madejski as Robert Earnshaw pounced in the second half.

Alex Pearce gave the Royals’ a deserved lead with quarter of an hour with a volley after a Jimmy Kebe header, before Federici set about denying several Forest chances. However his gaffe at the end sealed a point for Forest.
