Liverpool narrowly beat newly promoted West Bromwich Albion 1-0.
New signing Raul Meireles was shown around Anfield before the game with West Brom after he completed his move from Porto for a fee around £12m, while Paul Konchesky was also shown around Anfield ahead of his proposed move from Fulham to Liverpool.
Liverpool made a good start against West Brom as Torres saw his shot easily saved within the first few minutes, and soon after saw his shot blocked.
West Brom had half a chance at Anfield in the 25th minute when Jonas Olsson pulled the ball back for Marc-Antoine Fortune who saw his low shot saved by Pepe Reina.
With half an hour gone Liverpool seem as if all the players had just been brought together, with West Bromwich Albion being the better side.
The best chance of the day has fallen to Martin Skrtel on the hour mark as Dirk Kuyt heads it to the defender who sees his rising effort creep past the post.
Liverpool took the lead in the 65th minute after West Brom were attacking, Liverpool get the ball away quickly with Dirk Kuyt crossing for Torres in the box who volleys the ball left footed into the bottom corner.
Liverpool very nearly doubled their lead as Gerrard swings in a cross for Fernando Torres who volleys goalwards and is only denied by a brave save by Scott Carson.
Liverpool were denied a penalty with 5 minutes remaining as a cross into the box hits West Brom defender Jara’s outstretched arm, but referee Lee Probert waving play on.
Minutes later West Brom midfielder James Morrison recieved a red card as he goes in hard on Liverpool striker Fernando Torres, missing the ball, and the referee deeming it was a red card.
