Sunderland stun multi-million pound Manchester City at the Stadium of Light, beating them 1-0, with a goal coming in the dying minutes of the game.
Sunderland made a lively start against Manchester City with new signing El Mohammady trying to take advantage of the swirling wind from 25 yards out.
Manchester City then missed a glorious chance to opening the scoring after Tevez missed a glorious chance. Yaya Toure with a surging run lays it off to Carlos Tevez 12 yards out, and with the whole goal to aim at, the Argentinian spoons the ball over the bar.
Carlos Tevez was a man on a mission after missing that glorious chance and with 30 minutes on the clock Fraizer Campbell’s poor pass was intercepted by Tevez but he couldn’t get the ball out of his feet, but his shot went out for a corner.
Tevez and Yaya Toure linked up a few minutes later but Sunderland goalkeeper Mignolet came out quickly to save at the feet of the Ivorian centre midfielder.
Sunderland were dealt a blow just before half time as Fraizer Campbell was stretchered off and Michael Turner forced off with an injury with Danny Welbeck and David Bardsley replacing them.
It’s taken Sunderland nearly an hour for them to properly test Man City keeper Joe Hart as El Mohammady’s cross swings towards the front post forcing Joe Hart to tip it around the post.
With the introduction of Danny Welbeck Sunderland have stepped up their game a little. The young striker getting the ball and blasts a shot which sees the ball just over the bar from inside the Manchester City area.
Manchester City manager looks to push on and get a potential winner with 20 minutes to go as he brings off Lescott and brings on Adebayor.
Mancini’s gamble nearly pays off as Micah Richards nods the ball down from a corner with Adebayor’s flick goalwards looking as if its hitting the back of the net before a superb fingertip save by Mignolet denying the striker.
With the game going into injury time Sunderland were awarded a penalty after Manchester City defender Kolo Toure brought down Darren Bent in the box. Darren Bent picked himself up and scored the penalty to give Sunderland the lead and all three points.
