Allegations about Wayne Rooney’s personal life have hit Fabio Capello’s preparations for England’s upcoming qualifier in Switzerland.
The story, published in the Sunday Mirror and the News of the World, reveals that the Manchester United striker paid to have sex with a prostitute seven times over four months whilst his wife Colleen was pregnant with the couple’s first child.
He is said to have paid 21 year old Jennifer Thompson £1,000 each time in cash for their meetings in The Lowry hotel in Manchester.
The allegations have put more pressure on England boss Capello who is already without key players for the trip to Basle to play Switzerland in their second Euro 2012 Group C game.
They are further damaging to Rooney’s reputation after he previously admitted to having slept with prostitutes in Liverpool whilst playing for Everton.
Rooney trained with the squad on Sunday, England midfielder James Milner confirmed at a news conference.
The striker played a starring role in England’s 4-0 win over Bulgaria.
And Milner said Rooney was a top professional who would be concentrating on matters on the pitch.
The Manchester City star said: “He’s a top player, he showed it on Friday and trained fully today [Sunday].
“I’m sure he’ll continue to do that. Things are always said in the newspapers. It is part and parcel of football and down to us to make sure the only thing that matters is what happens on the pitch.
“We’re here to win a football match and we trained as a squad.”
He said it was important the team were not affected by personal matters adding: “You have highs, you have lows, and it’s down to us to make sure only thing that matters is on the field, come together and make sure we get the result.”
The issues leave Capello with the headache of whether to play Rooney which is likely given that the alternatives are lessening after Peter Crouch and Bobby Zamora both pulled out of the squad with injuries. Capello is however with the options of West Ham’s Carlton Cole and Sunderland’s Darren Bent despite their inexperience at international level.
Italian Capello will definitely have to do without Tottenham’s Michael Dawson in the heart of his defence, with West Ham’s Matthew Upson, Everton’s Phil Jagielka or Bolton’s Gary Cahill all possibilities to fill the breach.
First-choice central defenders John Terry and Rio Ferdinand are out of the reckoning with hamstring and knee problems, respectively.
